Outdoor Kindy Week, Term 3, 2014. DAY 4

Our final day of this terms outdoor kindy week was a lovely day.  Some parents and siblings joined us around the fire this morning. The air was cool and the fire attracted children on and off during the day, warming themselves as they decided on what they might play next.   The day was filled with rich, authentic play experiences, and lots of food! Floral citrus creations were on

Outdoor Kindy Week, Term 3, 2014. DAY 3

The chill in the air this morning was very apparent, and it was wonderful to spend a few minutes as a staff team standing around enjoying the warmth of our fire while discussing our upcoming day. We have been really lucky to have not only Lee, Katie, Janice and myself for all four days of this week, but also our student teacher Jane and the lovely Genevieve who

Outdoor Kindy Week, Term 3, 2014. DAY 2

It was a crisp but dry spring morning to start our second day of outdoor kindy…. the kind of morning that called for a warm beanie… and hinted at the fact we would probably need waterproof boots and coats as the day went on… Once the fire was lit, I took the chance to wander around the yard and take some shots of it prior

They ‘just play’

A common misconception about a play based programme, especially one with a strong nature and outdoor focus is that children are left to just play.  It is true, that the children spend the majority of their time in our programme at self chosen play experiences. Through careful observation, reflection and planning, our programme is developed ( and often evolves on a daily basis ) from the

Beach Discovery Excursion 2014

On a very cool and drizzly day we all travelled by bus to Normanville Beach. Some of our mums and dads followed us in their cars. As it was a very long way we stopped at the forest in Kuitpo to go to the toilet and have a run around. When we finally arrived at Normanville Beach it was raining and a bit windy,

Inspired to create

Just as we have seen the children’s creativity and resourcing of their own learning reach new heights, the process of removing most of the commercial toys from our outdoor learning environment has also sparked the creativity of the staff.  We are constantly looking for ways in which we can reuse and repurpose various materials, to include natural materials into our programme where ever possible, and provide the opportunity for us

Outdoor Kindy Week, Term 2, 2014. Day 4

Today was the final day of this terms outdoor kindy week. It was a typical autumn day, mild temperatures, no rain. Maybe this is why it began with many parents staying around to watch their children, chat by the fire, and immerse themselves and their younger children in the whole outdoor kindy experience.   Our Muddy Puddles Kitchen was the place to be today.  The new sign was proudly hung to

Outdoor Kindy Week Term 2, 2014. Day 2

There was no getting away from the weather today.  We arrived to a yard soaked with water and some minor damage to our outdoor kitchen area from the strong winds over night.  It was raining so heavily that it was a struggle to get the fire started.  Fire lighters and newspaper were soaked within seconds, and the tiny flame from the match was quickly extinguished by the rain.

Outdoor Kindy week Term 2, 2014…..day 1

The first thing we heard as we woke this morning was the sound of rain on the roof, it was steady and rhythmical, but as the time to head to kindy drew nearer it cleared….but as always the children arrived prepared for what ever might eventuate – I think some may even have been a little disappointed by the lack of rain today! It

‘Exploring Belonging’

Using a variety of media to share our learning experiences with the children, families and wider community is always an important part of our teaching and reflecting.  We – the staff and children,  take a lot of photos which are used in many different ways.  We use a large imac screen to share the many photos, videos and slide shows we have of the centres learning experiences, and those of the
